About Us

The Primary purpose of Main Street Gym is to promote, develop and foster Amateur Boxing among the underprivileged and at-risk youths of our community. An at-risk youth is defined as a youth who may be experiencing behavioral problems in school, home or community. Main Street Gym is also open to both males and females from eight years of age to adult.

History:

In 1990, Hal Chernoff and Don Hall combined their energy to build a youth oriented boxing program. Through the generous donations of many area contractors and suppliers, the property formerly known as Trailway’s Bus Terminal, located at 431 E. Main Street. The facility was converted into a working gym, complete with a regulation ring and a large variety of gear and training equipment.

The program is a non-profit organization with a solid board of directors that are well-known and respected within our community.

The coaching staff, headed by Hal Chernoff and the Board of Directors, is an all-volunteer effort that is a true testimony to the dedication of people involved in Main Street Gym.

Main Street Gym is a nonprofit boxing facility that works mostly with at-risk youths in community. We are geared toward creating highly competitive athletes that are serious about adhering to the discipline required to excel at the sport of amateur boxing. We are a member in good standing with USA Boxing (the governing body of amateur boxing). The program’s head coach, Hal Chernoff, has received his Elite Level 4 Coaching Certification, which is the highest attainable certification by USA Boxing.

We have produced a number of top quality boxers that have won State, Regional, National and International championships. Although we have worked with a number of professional boxers in the past we are selective in choosing athletes that did not come up through the Main Street program.

Main Street Gym also includes a collegiate boxing program through Salisbury University that is only open to students enrolled in the University. The Salisbury University Boxing Club members compete against other colleges across the country including West Point, The Naval Academy, Penn State and many more. The collegiate program’s intent is to create an even playing field among college age boxers that have not had long term formal training before entering college.

Main Street Gym strives to create solid young athletes, both in and outside of the ring that will understand the process of becoming successful in boxing as well as any venture outside the ring.
